Dr Michael Prager's Urban Protect Gold Detox Facial

Karl Plewka continues his Beauty Odyssey, paying Dr Prager a visit in Chelsea to try his Urban Protect Gold Detox Facial: a 60 minute treatment focused on cleansing and the removal of the effects of the pollution, combining hydra-dermabrasion, light therapy and an antioxidant infused facial massage.

Long before the 1994 film ‘Prêt-à-Porter’—Robert Altman’s dreadful and misguided attempt at spoofing the fashion industry—came Vogue photographer William Klein’s more art house, albeit French, 1966 satire ‘Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?’.  I remember seeing the movie as a child and marvelling at the fashion show scene where Peggy Moffitt-like models struggle to walk in ‘clothes’ made from sheet metal and how the editors in attendance remain poker-faced until Miss Maxwell, the Vreeland-esque editor-in-chief, declares of the ridiculous spectacle, “Magnifique!’”

I think that this mocking of those who prostrate themselves in front of designer’s alters has stayed with me throughout my life as I am not the fashion journalist who sees joy, transcendence, even Armageddon in a runway show—to me the clothes are either good or bad. Basta! However, in my other, shall we say, imposter-syndrome-riddled role as beauty magazine editor I have the same no-nonsense approach to beauty treatments, in particular facials. I simply can not view a facial as something messianic and revelatory, it’s either a good or a bad facial and preferably not one that leaves you alone in a darkened room, wearing a gloopy face mask, listening to whale music and internally screaming for the therapist to return.

“I simply can not view a facial as something messianic and revelatory, it’s either a good or a bad facial and preferably not one that leaves you alone in a darkened room, wearing a gloopy face mask, listening to whale music and internally screaming for the therapist to return.”

Now, a facial that’s definitely on the ‘good’ side is ‘Urban Protect Gold Detox’ at Dr Michael Prager in Knightsbridge. You may recall we recently reviewed Prager’s fabulous ‘Urban Protect’ skincare range and his new signature facial is no less impressive. The 60 minute treatment is all about cleansing and the removal of the effects of the pollution us city dwellers put up with on a daily basis.  It combines hydra-dermabrasion, light therapy and an antioxidant infused facial massage. I’ve had micro-dermabrasion many times and it’s always a bit, ‘Meh’, however the water jet streams from the hydra-dermabrasion machine, which are smaller than the average pore, deep clean your skin to archaelogical levels. In fact I don’t believer my skin ever felt cleaner, plumper or more radiant and that’s exactly why this ‘Little Black Book’ secret is drawing leading international makeup artists, magazine editors and celebrities in their droves.

As the internationally renowned mega MUA and star of BBC’s ‘Glow Up’, Val Garland says of the treatment, “One of the most exhilarating facial experiences I have had to date! The treatment itself plus the red light therapy left my skin feeling completely reborn and with no ‘down time redness’.  I was so impressed that I had to walk away with Dr. Michael’s entire skin care range too: the oils are beyond and melt right into the skin. Also, the staff at the Beauchamp Place clinic are exquisite, they really treat you like a queen.  Will I go back? Absolutely! VALIDATED!”

“This is not a ‘fluffy facial’ as Dr. Prager dismissively refers to lesser treatments, it actually does create change in ones skin and is something I loved so much I feel reticent to report about it here.”

This is not a ‘fluffy facial’ as Dr. Prager dismissively refers to lesser treatments, it actually does create change in ones skin and is something I loved so much I feel reticent to report about it here—after all, you might take an appointment that I wanted!  But beauty, like fashion, these days is ever the democracy and one has to share the good stuff and perhaps keep quiet about the crap.  But take heed of William Klein’s words, a man who raised a film camera above the parapet and never really recovered from the after-shock he created, “When I made ‘Polly Maggoo’ it was more or less the end of this collaboration with Vogue because I made a caricature of the editor-in-chief an the fashion people, so they didn’t really adore more me.”

Trust me, you will adore Dr. Michael Prager and his  ‘Urban Protect Gold Detox’ facial. That’s all.
