Birds of Paradise

“At night the sky is so clear, that you can see the stars and you feel so much closer to the moon. This morning I woke up to the most amazing sunrise. As I sat there watching the sun come over the horizon, the red hues of  the rising sun slowly turned orange and blended into the blue sky, it was breathtaking.”

Beauty Papers: What was the last beautiful thing you saw?
Ayami Nishimura: I’m in Brazil at the moment for a job, just outside of Rio de Janeiro. At night the sky is so clear, that you can see the stars and you feel so much closer to the moon. This morning I woke up to the most amazing sunrise. As I sat there watching the sun come over the horizon, the red hues of the the rising sun slowly turned orange and blended into the blue sky, it was breathtaking.

BP: What was the inspiration behind your shoot for Beauty Papers?
AN: The inspiration for this particular shoot came from the colourful tones and textures of exotic birds. I’ve always been captivated by the rich colours of tropical birds, and for a long time I have collected photographs of them.

BP: How did you approach the makeup?
AN: It wasn’t just about incorporating the colours of exotic birds on the model’s face, we wanted to make the photographs more dynamic. I made the models’ faces much paler, then applied rich colours giving a saturation and contrast that is beautiful. In the photographs I had collected the colour pairings of these birds are so beautiful, that there wasn’t much to discuss. The answers are often in nature!

"Glamour is much more progressive nowadays and very relevant. It’s not just about women anymore. Glamour embraces every gender and diversity."

BP: Tell us one of your favourite makeup techniques.
AN: I always like to begin with a five minute facial massage. It’s a technique that I learned a long time ago from a Japanese massage book, that has become an essential step in my process. The book explained to me how to follow the body’s lymph nodes and facial muscles to help to relax the model and refresh the face.

BP: Current kit hero product?
AN: I recently discovered Elmer’s Glue to help hide eyebrows. It’s one of my favourite beauty hacks.

BP: What is your favourite black?
AN: I like shiny pitch black, like the sheen of a crow’s feathers.

BP: What is your Favourite red?
AN: I like red rose, velvet deep red.

BP: What is your first memory of glamour?
AN: My mother’s pink lipstick

BP: What does the word glamour mean to you?
AN: For me, it means to embrace one’s sexiness and elegance, it is personal.

BP: What is the future of glamour?
AN: Glamour is much more progressive nowadays and very relevant. It’s not just about women anymore. Glamour embraces every gender and diversity.

BP: Living, dead, real of imaginary – who has the best makeup look?
AN: Sayoko Yamaguchi, Ziggy Stardust and Siouxie Sioux.
