Hair HOLLI SMITH Interview JOHN WILLIAM

BP: What was the last beautiful thing you saw?
HS: Was on a boat party last night for a friend’s birthday on the Paris Seine for dusk and sunset. Weather was perfect. People were genuine and engaged. Really lovely. Grateful for it.

BP: Describe the look for Li Ning, and who or what inspired it?
HS: Li wanted to add wigs with pastel pops of colour for the summery vibe he was presenting… Just a few to not go over the top.

BP: Describe the look for Acne?
HS: For Acne we wanted the boys to have structure going through the line up. We created bangs with short extensions. Perfect for Acne.

BP: Who or what was it inspired by?
HS: For me I see a bit of a shoegazer boy who has cut his own hair. A favorite.

BP: Describe the look for Kenzo?
HS: Long extensions to the ground. Fantasy.

BP: Who or what was it inspired by?
HS: Humberto knew someone growing up with this hair. It was so fun to do. He is always up for something: all in.

BP: Describe the look for GmbH?
HS: Hair that is fresh from the ocean. Slightly damp but with beautiful texture.

BP: Who or what was it inspired by?
HS: Serhat’s family growing up on vacation.

BP: Key products for this season?
HS: Carol’s Daughter Healthy Hair Butter, Go Create by Loreal, Gel Serum by Oribe.

BP: Current kit hero product?
HS: Carol’s daughter all the way.

BP: Tell us one of your favourite hair techniques we can try at home.
HS: Let the shower water set your hair. So you comb your hair in the shower, then do a final rinse so your hair is like glass – one sheet of hair. Get out of shower, don’t shake the hair out, blot it carefully. Do not put your hair up in a towel, let it dry on its own. This is how you mimic ocean hair, poolside hair… no salt spray no product… all water. For curly hair don’t remove water as much as we were taught, think of it like a gel.

BP: Do you have a favourite hair gadget?
HS: I use my hands more than any tools.

BP: Have you got any fashion week rituals or traditions?
HS: This time I used the Lime Scooter to every show and I was so liberated from the traffic issues.

BP: Fashion week survival tips?
HS: I am trying out staying in Paris right now for a few months. It’s been a huge improvement from traveling from NYC in terms of energy. I got a months gym membership too! That’s a huge help with shows!

BP: What does the word glamour mean to you?
HS: I love when someone doesn’t try too hard to look themselves. Even if they worked at it. That’s what I think is glamour.

BP: Living, dead, real or imaginary … who has the best hair-do?
HS: All of the band LiliPUT.
